Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q)
1. What is window tint? Tinting film is usually a very thin layer of clear polyester film with tinting agents such as dyes and/or metals infused onto the film. Once this tinting film is applied to a window, how outside visible light comes through that window becomes altered. Normal auto glass without any tint applied will Reflect around 5% of visible light (known as VLR%), Absorb another 5% (known as VLA%), and Transmits 90% of visible light (known as VLT%) into the car. When people refer to tint with a particular percentage, they are most likely referring to the tint's VLT% (Visible Light Transmittance). VLT% tells you how much visible light is allowed to shine into the vehicle, and also indirectly how dark the tint looks (For example, 50% tint allows more visible light through and is lighter than 20% tint which is darker and allows less visible light through). Tinting film doesn't just block visible light. It also blocks harmful cancer-causing ultra-violet (UV-A and UV-B) rays as well as infra-red (IR) rays that cause solar heat to accumulate within your vehicle.
2. How does window tint aid in preventing overheating? With proper tinting, a vehicle's interior cabin can be up to 60% cooler during hot summer days. But, the biggest difference you will find is during extremely hot days, when you begin to feel your air conditioning cool down your vehicle alot faster than normal and you will also notice that the air conditioning does not have to work as hard to maintain a cool comfortable environment. This all equates to better driver and passenger comfort as well as some added fuel savings.
3. How does window tint aid in protecting your skin? Window tint blocks harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun which have proven to cause skin cancer. Tinting your car can eliminate up to 99% of these damaging rays.
4. How does window tint aid in protecting you during a automobile accident? One of the most common causes of physical harm during any vehicle accident is from the explosive glass shattering around you upon impact. Window tint bonds to the glass and may possibly hold the glass together during an accident, shielding the occupants in the vehicle.
5. How does window tint aid in driver safety? Window tint absorbs light from the outside, thus reducing any blinding glare from the sun, snow, water, reflections, as well as from the headlights of other vehicles. This increases driver awareness and reduces driver fatigue, helping you drive more safely.
6. How does window tint aid in providing added security and privacy? Common thieves target your vehicle by the contents left in plain sight. Window tint can help hide any of your valuables you may have forgotten in your vehicle.
7. How does window tint aid in protecting your upholstery? Excessive solar heat and harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays will cause any upholstery to crack and fade over time. Window tint acts as a sunscreen and prolongs the lifetime of your upholstery.
8. What shade of tint should I select? This is entirely up to your personal preference. Malcolm's Tinting will be happy to accommodate whatever shade you choose to have.
9. Will I be able to see out of my tinted windows at night? Yes, as long as you don't have any pre-existing night vision problems. Unlike sunglasses that will impair your ability to drive at night, tinting film is designed to reduce glare and not impede night-time driving. Depending on your choice of tint shade (there are crazy extremes), you may notice a slight reduction in visibility when there is absolutely no light around, but when there is light you will be able to see through the tint while also reducing any glare. During daytime driving, you will definitely be able to see outside and you may not need your sunglasses anymore while driving.
10. Does window tint go on the inside or the outside of the window? Window tint always goes on the inside of the window.
11. Will I have to clean my windows before installation? No! Our experienced installation staff will thoroughly clean the interior of every pane of glass that we are tinting. This must be done in order to provide you with the best installation possible.
12. Will my car be cooler when I get in on a hot day? Yes, but for the most part, it's going to still be hot due to the lack of ventilation that traps the heat within the closed vehicle. The big difference you will get occurs when you attempt to cool down your car with air conditioning. It will cool down much faster and be able to stay cooler inside your vehicle much easier. Also, you will begin to notice that the sunlight that hits your skin is much more bearable than before without any tint.
13. How long do you need my car for? It normally varies on the type of vehicle and the number of windows you want tinted, but we like to allow 2-3 hours for a complete installation.
14. Will my windows be cloudy or bubbly right after they are tinted? Yes, this will occur temporarily after your tint is installed. A thin layer of water will be trapped under the film until it evaporates. This usually takes 2-4 days in sunny weather.
15. Will my tint bubble, crack, or peel? No! When you have your tint installed by Malcolm's Tinting your tint is GUARANTEED not to bubble, crack or peel. Check out our Free Lifetime Warranty promise.
16. Why do some cars have a faded purple tint? This is because the poor quality tint was used on the vehicle. Cheaper quality tint will degrade in color and fade (or turn purple) after prolonged exposure to sunlight. Malcolm's Tinting only uses the highest grades of tint and we GUARANTEE it will not fade over the lifetime of your vehicle.
17. Why do some cars have bubbly tint all across the window? This is because the installation was performed by an inexperienced person. T here are special techniques, procedures and equipment used to ensure that bubbling will not occur. At Malcolm's Tinting, we always have an experienced installer doing the work for you. In fact, our installation is GUARANTEED not to bubble for the lifetime of your vehicle.
18. How do I clean my tinted windows? You can clean your windows with any cleaner that does not contain ammonia. Stay away from using any abrasive materials or cheap paper towels to wipe your tint. A soft cloth or squeegee seems to work best.
19. Can I roll my windows down soon after it has been tinted? No, we recommend that you leave your windows up for at least 2 - 4 days after tint has been installed. This is because the bond between the window film and the window itself has not yet dried completely. Parking your car in direct sunlight is a good way to help speed up this drying process.
20. Can window tint be removed after it is installed? Yes, window tint can be removed at any time after installation. However, it must be scraped off entirely. It is a messy job. Please call us if you require a removal. We would be more than happy to assist you.
21. How do I tell which tinting companies do good and bad work? This is a tough question to answer. Some companies have experienced installers as well as inexperienced installers so you might even get different results from the same company. Here at Malcolm's Tinting, we employ only experienced installers. Don't be fooled by high prices. Higher prices does not always equal higher quality. Look for shops that carry quality products and offer lifetime warranty on their work, like Malcolm's Tinting!
